Pizza chiena, also known as pizzagaina or pizza rustica, is a traditional Italian Easter Pie, originating in Southern Italy. It is a celebration of the end of Lent.

Pizza chiena meaning “stuffed pizza”, emerged as a way to use up leftover ingredients after the Lenten fast, traditionally filled with cured meats, cheese and eggs.  The dish symbolizes abundance and celebration.

The pie has a flaky crust and filled with cured meat(s) cheeses, and eggs.
